Chapter Three

Tiffany looked up from the paperwork she had been reading, taking a moment to rest her eyes and look at the TV. “Authorities are proceeding in the case against Ralph Lofton, who allegedly staged a series of murders in order to attempt to implicate billionaire businessman Daniel Lawrence…” She picked up the remote and changed the channel as the image of her husband filled the screen; he was in an orange jumpsuit, being led by two very impressive looking guards, wrists and ankles both shackled. Part of her was gratified at the image, while a deep-down part of her still experienced fear just at the thought of his continued existence, at the visual reminder that while he was incarcerated—he had been denied bail, Tiffany had heard—he did still live. He was still a silent menace, though one that couldn’t conceivably harm her anymore.

Tiffany let a mindless bit of reality television sink into her as she turned her thoughts to more immediate troubles. Daniel had been acting strangely ever since the night he had arrived home late; he was still sweet, still kind and tender and playful, but there was a solemnity to him, a hesitation—a guardedness—that Tiffany couldn’t help but notice. It had been almost a week since that night, and at first she hadn’t sensed anything amiss. Gradually, however, she had noticed the way that he would pause before answering any questions about his existence as a vampire. He answered her evasively, changing the subject or turning her mind away from it with one of his skillful kisses. True to his word, Daniel had gotten her work to do while he was away in the daylight hours—she was reading through legal documents, through reports that he said he trusted no one but her to review for him before he looked them over himself. It had given her a little bit of pride that he trusted her—but his reticence in other areas gave her pause.

Before his business meeting that had run over, Daniel had been forthcoming about anything she had wanted to ask him regarding his life as a vampire. She was slowly coming to terms with what it all meant; he had been alive for hundreds of years and apart from certain dangers, he was immortal—he would never change physically, never grow old the way that she would. He had to consume blood in order to live. She understood those things intellectually, but Tiffany was still not sure she could handle the full reality of it; if she saw him feeding, she thought she might be sick. It wasn’t a thought that she had comfortably. Tiffany wanted to be able to fully and completely accept the man who had taken care of her in her time of weakness, but it was difficult for her to even understand what kind of perspective could come from hundreds of years of living—most of those years spent conscientiously avoiding the sun.

She stretched and looked at the paperwork that Daniel had brought her,
